Seniors are one of the primary targets for financial abuse, and many times, the abuse takes place by someone close to the individual – even close family members. Many steps can be taken to prevent financial abuse, and there are many signs that can make us more aware to catch a possible case of financial abuse – following are a few:
- Unusual bank activity, especially large sums being taken out at ATM’s
- Suspicious signatures on checks or important documents
- Missing belongings or property
- Bank statements that have been transferred to a different address
- Bills going unpaid, discontinued utilities, or eviction notices
- Legal documents signed, but not understood, by the senior
Let’s do our part to protect our vulnerable parents, friends, and aging community by always checking into suspicious activity and any signs of financial abuse.

How to Help Seniors Avoid Financial Abuse
Life After Retirement
Many seniors want to remain active after retirement – which for some means finding a part time job or volunteer activity. This time in one’s life provides a great opportunity to start something new, to begin something unique that may not have been a possibility earlier on. For many of these seniors, the work is no longer about the money, but becomes about passion and purpose – a driving factor in many of life’s most rewarding experiences.
Following are some of the benefits of having a part-time job or volunteer position as an older adult:
- For many, working provides a source of personal satisfaction
- Having this type of social interaction may provide a vibrant social life and a network of professional colleagues and potential friends
- Allows for a smoother transition into the more relaxed lifestyle of retirement
However, some of these experiences are dependent upon transportation, assistance from a companion, mobility, and other factors that arise with natural aging.
We have many resources which allow us to help match seniors with part time work and/or volunteer opportunities including caregivers who are dedicated to helping older adults in the Twin Cities area maintain their independence.
We’d be happy to offer assistance, resources and referrals as needed.
